Find your sunshine
Seville, Limassol and several Turkish resorts lead September's heat choices, with daytime highs of 30°C against London's 19°C. Choose Seville for heat without a long flight, Cyprus for very few rainy days, or Antalya for sea temperatures of 28°C. The main trade-off is between time in the air and warmth in the water. If strong midday heat sounds more tiring than appealing, Greece and the milder Mediterranean options deserve a closer look.

40 of the 78 destinations in Europe average 25°C or more by day. These are the warmest.
We call the sea swimmable at 22°C or more. In September that is 60 destinations in Europe.
Direct flights under four hours from Gatwick, ranked by daytime high.
Seville leads the table with 30°C by day and 19°C at night and 4 rainy days (2 h 42 min from London). Limassol leads with 30°C by day and 22°C at night, a 27°C sea and 1 rainy days (4 h 48 min from London). Antalya leads with 30°C by day and 20°C at night, a 28°C sea and 2 rainy days (4 h 24 min from London). Kusadasi leads with 30°C by day and 20°C at night, a 23°C sea and 2 rainy days (4 h from London). Marmaris leads with 30°C by day and 22°C at night, a 26°C sea and 2 rainy days (4 h 12 min from London).
Warm rather than hot (20-25°C): Lisbon 25°C, Florence 25°C, Lanzarote 25°C, Lloret de Mar 25°C, Halkidiki 25°C, Budva 25°C and 28 more. Hot but wet - over 25°C with more than eight rainy days: Saranda (8 days), Salou (9 days), Rome (9 days), Naples (9 days). Over 30°C by day: Seville, Limassol, Antalya. For scale, London averages 19°C in September.
Seville suits travellers who want proper heat but would rather spend less time flying: its 30°C daytime high comes with a flight of 2 h 42 min. The catch is that this is a heat-led choice, not a sea-temperature choice, and walking around at midday may feel demanding. Expect 19°C nights and 4 rainy days. For a coastal stay, Albufeira and Costa de la Luz both offer 28°C days and flights of 2 h 54 min. Their seas are cooler than the eastern options, though: 21°C in Albufeira and 22°C on Costa de la Luz. Choose them if a shorter journey matters more than warm-water swimming.
Cyprus makes sense if avoiding rain is your priority. Limassol and Ayia Napa both have 30°C days and 1 rainy day, with seas of 26°C and 27°C respectively. Their flight time of 4 h 48 min is the compromise. Antalya offers a different balance: the same 30°C daytime heat, a warmer 28°C sea and a shorter flight of 4 h 24 min, but 2 rainy days. Alanya also has a 28°C sea, paired with gentler 28°C days and 4 rainy days. For travellers planning to spend much of the holiday swimming, these warmer waters are a stronger reason to travel east than the daytime heat alone. Keep the hottest part of the day for shade or a break indoors.
Crete and Athens suit travellers who want warmth for swimming without choosing the hottest destinations. Both have 28°C days, 25°C seas and 3 rainy days; Athens has the shorter flight at 3 h 42 min, against Crete's 4 h 6 min. If that still sounds too hot for walking, Lisbon and Florence sit at 25°C, while Barcelona, Nice and Dubrovnik offer 24°C days. Treat these as comfortable-warm alternatives rather than equivalent heat choices. Rain also deserves attention: Salou, Rome and Naples each have 9 rainy days, making them less suitable if keeping outdoor plans flexible would frustrate you. Pack a light rain layer rather than assuming September will stay dry.
A little more detail
Plain answers, grounded in the averages.
40 of the 78 destinations we track in Europe average a daytime high of 25°C or more in September. The hottest are Seville (30°C), Limassol (30°C), Antalya (30°C), Kusadasi (30°C), Marmaris (30°C), Ayia Napa (30°C).
3 destinations in Europe average more than 30°C by day in September: Seville (30°C), Limassol (30°C), Antalya (30°C).
The sea averages 22°C or more in September at 60 destinations in Europe, including Limassol (27°C), Antalya (28°C), Kusadasi (23°C), Marmaris (26°C), Ayia Napa (27°C), Fethiye (27°C).
Warm (22°C+) with three rainy days or fewer in September: Limassol (30°C, 1 rainy days), Antalya (30°C, 2 rainy days), Kusadasi (30°C, 2 rainy days), Marmaris (30°C, 2 rainy days), Ayia Napa (30°C, 1 rainy days), Fethiye (30°C, 3 rainy days).
London averages a daytime high of 18.6°C in September, so the 40 destinations over 25°C are at least 12°C warmer.
Both have 30°C days and 2 rainy days, but Marmaris has the warmer sea at 26°C versus Kusadasi's 23°C. Kusadasi's flight is shorter at 4 h, compared with 4 h 12 min for Marmaris. Prioritise Marmaris if warm water matters most.
Ayia Napa has nights of 23°C, while Limassol and Marmaris sit at 22°C, making them better fits for warm evenings outdoors. Albufeira falls to 18°C; a light layer is more useful there, especially if you tend to feel chilly after sunset.
No. Limassol and Ayia Napa have just 1 rainy day in September, making them strong choices if rain is a concern, but not a guarantee of a dry stay. Antalya, Kusadasi and Marmaris also compare favourably, with 2 rainy days each.
