Your February weather guide

Weather in Spain in February

February is a good month for Spain if you want mild weather for spending time outdoors rather than a hot beach holiday. Country averages of 16°C by day and 11°C at night make layers more useful than an all-summer wardrobe. Gran Canaria is the warmer choice at 20°C during the day. The catch is that comfortable afternoon air does not guarantee comfortable swimming, and your destination makes a real difference.

Which part of Spain in February?

What to pack for Spain in February

Based on the averages: proper layers and a jacket - daytime highs average only 16°C; a warm layer for evenings, when it drops to around 11°C; a light waterproof for the odd shower.

Similar weather elsewhere in February

Within 1.5°C of Spain's February daytime average: Sousse (17°C, sea 15°C), Madeira (17°C, sea 18°C), Albufeira (17°C, sea 15°C), Algarve (16°C, sea 15°C), Las Vegas (16°C). See the full ranking for February.

Where to go for warmer weather

Gran Canaria is the strongest choice if warmth is your priority, with daytime temperatures of 20°C and nights around 16°C. Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogan, Taurito, Amadores, Meloneras and Playa del Ingles share that temperature pattern, so there is little reason to choose between them on warmth alone. Los Gigantes, Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena also reach 20°C, but have slightly more rainy days. At the cooler end, San Sebastian averages 12°C by day: better suited to travellers happy to wear a jacket than those hoping to sit out in light clothing. Even that is milder than London's 8°C February average.

Expect outdoor weather, not reliable beach heat

Plan for walks and time outside, with the option to add or remove a layer as conditions change. Spain averages 6.2 hours of sunshine, but that is not a promise of clear skies throughout your stay. A light waterproof is sensible, while a jumper or jacket will be useful after dark. Swimming is the bigger compromise: the country-average sea temperature is 15°C, rising to 19°C around Gran Canaria and the other warmer destinations listed here. That may suit swimmers comfortable with cool water, but it is not warm-water bathing. Even in the hottest destination, only 4% of days exceed 25°C, so do not plan around strong heat.

Spain in February FAQs

Plain answers, grounded in the averages.

Where is the hottest place in Spain in February?

Gran Canaria is the warmest of the 87 places we track in Spain in February with an average high of 20.5°C; San Sebastian is the coolest at 11.7°C.

Is the sea warm in Spain in February?

Not really: the warmest sea we track in Spain in February is 19.4°C at La Palma, below the 22°C most people find comfortable.

Is Spain warm enough for a beach holiday in February?

It can suit time by the sea, especially in Gran Canaria, where days average 20°C. However, the sea is 19°C, so swimming may feel cool. Choose February for mild outdoor weather rather than a holiday that depends on heat and long swims.

Will rain disrupt my plans?

Spain averages 5 rainy days in February, compared with 3 in Gran Canaria and 4 in Los Gigantes. Rain need not rule out an outdoor-focused trip, but keep plans flexible and pack a light waterproof rather than assuming every day will stay dry.
