Your July weather guide
Yes - July is a good month for Portugal if you want warm, mostly dry weather and plenty of time outdoors. Country averages reach 28°C by day and ease to 19°C at night, while the sea averages 20°C. The main catch is that hot afternoons do not translate into particularly warm water. Choose the Algarve for stronger heat, or consider Lisbon and Funchal if you prefer milder daytime temperatures.

Based on the averages: summer clothes for the day; swimwear if you do not mind a bracing 20°C sea.
Within 1.5°C of Portugal's July daytime average: Paphos (29°C, sea 27°C), Salou (29°C, sea 25°C), Alicante (29°C, sea 25°C), Verona (29°C), Bodrum (29°C, sea 25°C). See the full ranking for July.
For the hottest weather, Albufeira leads with average daytime temperatures of 31°C. Ferragudo and Carvoeiro are close behind at 30°C, making these better choices for travellers who enjoy heat than for those planning long walks at midday. Alvor, Vilamoura, Quarteira and Vale do Lobo average 29°C, so choosing between them on daytime temperature alone makes little difference. Faro offers a gentler balance at 27°C, with sea temperatures of 21°C rather than the 20°C typical of the other Algarve destinations listed. Lisbon is milder again at 26°C, which may suit a more active holiday. Funchal has the lowest daytime average in this comparison at 25°C, making it the clearest option here if avoiding stronger afternoon heat matters most.
July's average of 11.8 hours of sunshine gives you plenty of scope to spend time outdoors, but it also makes shade and sun protection important. Put longer walks earlier in the day and leave room for a shaded break when the afternoon feels hot. Light clothing should work well by day; a light layer is sensible for evenings, particularly in Lisbon, Carvoeiro and Alvor, where nights average 18°C. Treat swimming as a cooling dip rather than expecting warm water: the country sea average is 20°C, and Lisbon's is 19°C. If sea warmth is a deciding factor, Faro has the edge among the destinations with water temperatures supplied.
