Spring: brighter days, but keep the layers

March is still cold, with daytime temperatures around 5°C and nights close to freezing, so it suits travellers comfortable spending time outside in warm layers. April feels less wintry at 9°C by day, though evenings remain chilly and waterproofs still earn their place. May offers the most appealing spring balance: daytime temperatures reach 12°C, sunshine averages 7 hours daily, and it is the driest month. That does not make it reliably dry, with 14 rain days on average. Choose May if sunshine matters more than warmth, and keep a fleece or jumper handy rather than packing only light summer clothes.

Summer: the mildest weather, rather than real heat

June is a good compromise for travellers who want milder days without waiting for the warmest part of summer. Its 15°C daytime average is comfortable for being active in layers, and it shares May's average of 14 rain days. July and August are warmer at around 17°C, but neither offers dependable hot weather. July has the better sunshine average, while August brings slightly warmer sea temperatures and more rain days. Even at midday, a removable outer layer is more useful than assuming you will be warm in a T-shirt. Keep outdoor plans flexible and carry waterproofs rather than treating summer as a dry season.

Autumn and winter: cooling days and frequent rain

September remains a reasonable option if you can accept wetter, less sunny weather: days average 14°C, though rain is more frequent than in summer. October drops to 10°C, making warm layers more important throughout the day. November's 5°C daytime average and limited sunshine make it a weaker choice for a weather-led holiday. December and January are colder still, at around 3°C and 2°C respectively, with nights below freezing and frequent rain. February edges back to 3°C by day, but its -2°C nights mean there is little reason to pack lighter. These months suit travellers who do not need long spells outdoors to enjoy their trip. Prioritise a warm waterproof coat, footwear that keeps out the wet and plans you can change when conditions are uninviting.
