Winter: mild days, cool nights and more rain

December and January are better for time outdoors between showers than for a dependable beach holiday. December averages 15°C by day, with January dipping to 14°C; both have 11 rain days, so bring a waterproof layer and keep plans flexible. February edges up to 15°C and is a little less wet, but it still feels like winter once the sun goes down. Nights average 6°C in January and February, making a proper evening layer useful. The sea cools from 20°C in December to 17°C in February, so swimming is more a matter of personal tolerance than an obvious reason to travel.

Spring: increasingly warm, but the sea takes longer

March is a gradual warm-up rather than an early summer, with daytime averages of 17°C and nights of 8°C. Pack layers for sitting outside, especially after sunset. April is more comfortable for long spells outdoors at 21°C, although its 18°C sea is still cool for a leisurely swim. May offers the strongest spring balance: afternoons average 25°C, sunshine reaches 10 hours a day and rain becomes less frequent. Its 21°C sea may suit you if you prefer cooler water, but June is a better choice for warmth. Spring suits travellers who want outdoor time without organising the whole day around avoiding midday heat.

Summer and autumn: heat first, then a warmer sea than spring

June brings beach weather, with 31°C afternoons, a 25°C sea and little rain. July and August are the months to choose only if you enjoy heat: both average 35°C by day, while nights stay warm at 23°C and 24°C respectively. Plan active time early or late, with shade during the hottest hours. September eases back to 31°C, but its 28°C sea keeps swimming appealing. October offers a gentler balance at 26°C by day and 25°C in the water, though showers become more likely. November is a bigger change: days average 20°C, nights fall to 11°C and rain is more frequent. Its 22°C sea retains some warmth, but cooler air makes it a less dependable choice for a holiday centred on swimming.
